Before clearing any site data, protect your saves. Browser saves may be stored locally, and deleting website storage can erase progress. Clearing cached files and clearing all site data are different operations.
Last reviewed: October 19, 2026, for the current v0.2 browser build. The steps below are troubleshooting checks, not a guaranteed fix for every device.
1. Back Up Before Resetting Storage
If the game can still open, use its save screen first. Then look for Ren’Py’s menu in the upper-left corner of the web game. When available:
- Choose Export saves and download the ZIP.
- Keep it outside the browser’s storage.
- Use Import saves when restoring in a compatible build.
These entries are documented by Ren’Py; their visibility depends on the game’s web interface. If you cannot reach an export option, do not delete site data as your first troubleshooting step.
The game is embedded from itch.io. Saves may belong to the embedded game’s origin and may be partitioned by the surrounding website. Opening the official page or another browser does not guarantee that the same saves will appear. Preserve the original browser profile until you have a usable backup.
2. Check Loading and Focus
- Click Play once and allow time for the initial game assets to download. A loaded frame is not proof that all game assets are ready.
- Keep the game tab visible, especially on mobile, where background tabs can be paused.
- If a menu appears but input seems inactive, click or tap inside the game. Exit fullscreen to check for hidden browser prompts.
- If the game is responsive, save before using Reload or refreshing the page; unsaved progress can be lost.
3. Compare the Official Page
Open the official itch.io game page and try its browser player without deleting anything from the original tab. This helps compare an embedding problem with a problem affecting the official player too.
A successful test in a different browser or private window is useful evidence, but it is not a transfer of your saves. Private browsing storage may disappear when the private session closes.
4. Check Browser, Network, and Extensions
Ren’Py targets recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari releases, including mobile versions. Browser support can still vary; see the engine’s supported-browser notes.
Update the browser, close other heavy tabs, and use a stable connection. If privacy tools or extensions block game assets, test a temporary site-specific exception and restore your settings afterwards. Do not disable all browser protections permanently.
If you hear sound but see a black screen, note that detail. If an error message appears, copy it before reloading. These observations are more useful than repeatedly clearing data.
5. Clear Cached Files Only After Safer Checks
If you have backed up accessible saves, try a normal reload, then a hard refresh or a cache-only cleanup. Read the browser’s deletion dialog carefully: cookies, site data, local storage, and IndexedDB are not the same as cached images and files.
Treat a full site-data reset as a last resort, with a warning that local progress can be lost. Do not clear all websites’ data to troubleshoot one game.
Historical Blue-Tent Animation Fix
The December 9, 2025 official patch note reports browser-animation improvements and a fix for freezing during the Ticket Taker animation in the blue tent, tested there on Chrome and Edge. An old report of that freeze is not proof that the current build still has it. Compare the current official player and record the scene if it happens again.
6. Report a Reproducible Failure
Record the browser and OS version, device, where loading stops, visible error text, and whether the official page reproduces the issue. The official FAQ provides the developer’s support contact for game bugs.
For a playable alternative, use a compatible download from the official game page. Check save compatibility before importing a backup into a different build.
